Black Spinel Ring
This is my latest stash from local homegrown jeweller, Tianpo Jewellery.
It is a 18k white gold ring set with 8 facetted spinel.
Nearly overlooked this ring which was on sale, because, the sales person, who was a newbie, introduced it as a oynx ring, which I would not really buy!
It was only when I was at the counter looking at another design which was too small for me, and could not be resized that his colleague mentioned that the ring was set with spinel!
And that was it, I bought the ring!

Exaggerated Claims
Some of the claims made by sales people are so far fetched..
I just came across a claim from some company that their white gold chains will NEVER tarnish! That is so unreal, since white gold is just rhodium plated, and the plating will come of over some time...
I wonder if they are ready to put their reputation on stake at such claims!

Two arrested over biggest gem robbery: police
LONDON (AFP) - - London police have arrested two men in connection with what is thought to be the country's biggest jewellery heist, a spokesman said.
Two gun-toting and smartly dressed men walked into an exclusive Graff store in central London and stole 43 rings, bracelets, necklaces and watches with a retail value of 40 million pounds.
The Metropolitan Police said the pair were arrested Wednesday but would not issue any more details for "operational reasons" -- including whether they were the same two captured on video pulling off the raid earlier this month.
A record reward of up to one million pounds has been offered to find those behind the robbery in broad daylight on London's swanky New Bond Street.
A 50-year-old man has already been arrested over the robbery, which police have said was well organised and could have involved accomplices.
The two men, dressed in grey suits and white shirts and speaking with London accents, arrived in a black taxi and threatened staff with handguns.
As they left, they dragged a female staff member with them and fired a warning shot outside. They left her behind as they raced off in a blue BMW.
They abandoned their car nearby, firing another shot at the ground. No one was hurt.
Graff, which is known for its diamonds and caters to celebrities, was also targeted in 2003 in what until now was reportedly Britain's previous most expensive jewellery robbery, worth 23 million pounds.
Stars spotted wearing Graff's jewels include Paris Hilton, Kylie Minogue, Naomi Campbell, Oprah Winfrey and Victoria Beckham.
The latest heist is also thought to be the second biggest robbery in Britain, after a 53-million-pound raid on a Securitas depot in Kent in 2006, police said. A gang tied up staff and stole cash.

Thailand's Haunted Heist
A man claiming to be haunted by a ghost after stealing a 30,000 baht gold bracelet from a shop five years ago turned himself to police today.
Jirasak Phahurat, 33, from Chonburi in Thailand told police that a ghost came to him every day for five years, telling him to return a bracelet with the same value to the shop owner.
So, Mr Jirsak bought a new 30-gram gold bracelet and surrendered himself to the Sri Racha District Police station at 11 am today.
Police informed the shop owner, Phayom Phanchotkul, who was given the replacement bracelet.
She said she did not care to pursue a legal case against the man now that he has shown his remorse.
Mr Jirsak walked into the shop one day in October, 2004.
Claiming to be armed, he told the shop owner to give him the gold bracelet. He then fled the scene.
The robbery was recorded on the security camera and police obtained a warrant for his arrest.
Mr Jirasak said he fled to Phatthalung, where the the ghost appeared to him nightly.
“The ghost told me to return to buy a new bracelet and give it back to the shop owner,” Mr Jirasak said.

Protecting your jewellery - Part 2!
Continued from my previous installment on protecting your jewellery!
Consider purchasing a "false-bottom container" to protect your precious jewellery items. Remember to keep these containers in realistic places in your house, and make sure they are not mistakenly thrown away if they appear to be empty.
Consider installing a secure home safe. A safe that can be permanently mounted in your home, in concrete, provides better protection than a small movable safe and can be hooked to an alarm system. Remember that anyone that breaks into your home can probably cart away a small safe easily!
When traveling, always use a hotel or ship safe or security vault for your expensive jewellery items. Do not carry it around! Personal experience from me, as I have lost stuff abroad for not locking them in the hotel safe!
Carry expensive items with you on board planes, ships or trains. Do not put them in checked luggage. You can probably imagine what would happen in the event of lost luggage!
Place jewellery that you don’t wear often in a bank vault. The insurance savings can be substantial.

Stash from Singapore International Jewellery Show 2009: Mammoth Ivory Frogs
These mammoth ivory carved frogs look so real that they might just come to live any moment and hop away!
In fact with the white colouration, they remind me of the African clawed frog!
A really interesting pair that I got from the recent Singapore International Jewellery Show 2009, hope to make cufflinks out of them soon!

Stash from Singapore International Jewellery Show 2009: Ammolite Cab
Alright, this cab is not really my purchase from the show.. but rather a gift from one of the store holders there because a group of my friends were so enthusiastic in buying the stuff from his store...
This piece has a nice play of colour( as you can see in the picture taken with flash), as well as an interesting shield shape!
Will be thinking what I can do with this!

Stash from Singapore International Jewellery Show 2009: Moonstone Ring
I do not normally wear rings with cabochons in them as they are kinda too "retro" looking for me...
But this piece really caught my eye when I was at the show!
But this piece really caught my eye when I was at the show!
I like the modern design of the setting, coupled with a good quality moonstone in setting which appears to be part of the ring contour.
Look at the beautiful blue sheen!
It's set in 925 silver, which means, I should get this plated soon..
